In Use

I bought this copy stand column to get a stable and easy to set up solution for digitizing negatives with a digital camera. The fact that it mounts to any table is a big bonus.

Comparing it to my tripod solution, the Novoflex MagicStudio Repro offers superior stability and is far quicker to set up and get everything level. It also takes up less desk space.

I attached a Manfrotto 234RC head which is originally designed for monopods. It increases the space between the camera and the column, allowing for a more convenient working distance. As the 234RC uses the 200PL quick release plate, it is also very convenient to mount and unmount the camera.

The sliding mount can be easily adjusted and offers the perfect amount of friction for precisely adjusting the working distance. This is probably the most important improvement over a tripod solution.

Conclusion

While the Novoflex MagicStudio Repro is not the cheapest copy stand, it is superior in terms of stability, durability and usability.

If you are serious about reproduction photography (be it artwork or digitizing other analogue media) but don’t want a copy stand that takes up a lot of space, there is no better option on the market.
