Build Quality
I am always hesitant to buy third party items instead of original Nikon as I have very high standards in terms of build quality and serviceability, but let me be clear: The SIGMA 18-35 is exceptionally well made (in Japan). All components feel excellent and yes, this lens is fit for many years of professional use.
Optical Performance
To put it simple, the SIGMA 18-35 is optically superb.
Regardless of the selected aperture, center sharpness leaves nothing to be desired. The lens is perfectly usable at f/1.8 across the whole zoom range and only gets better until about f/2.8. Judging from MTF-charts from various specialized review sites, the lens is one of the highest resolving lenses available for the APS-C format.
The 18-35 does vignette moderately from f/1.8 to f/2.8. From f/4 onward, there is practically no vignette present any more.
One amazing trait of the lens is its close focus capability. It can focus down to 28cm without any detriments to its optical performance.
In Use
The SIGMA 18-35 f/1.8 offers all the controls needed. There is an AF/MF switch, the zoom-ring and the focus ring both are rubberized.
Working with the lens is a pleasure. Everything feels well made and the user experience is very satisfying.
The well-dampened focus ring allows for smooth manual focusing, which should please every film maker.
I’ve tested the auto focus on several different Nikon bodies and it was spot on every time. It is noteworthy to mention that SIGMA offers a USB-dock to update the lens firmware and fine tune the focus if needed.
In general, the auto focus is very quiet. If filming, however, some AF-noise might be recorded if the microphone is positioned too close to the lens. As I manually focus when filming, this was not an issue for me.
Considerations
If you are shooting APS-C because of the size and weight advantage, this is not the right lens for you. It is as heavy and as big as professional full frame zooms.
Other high end APS-C zoom lenses like the AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 ED slightly out-resolve the SIGMA at certain apertures and offer a wider, more versatile zoom range, but can’t match the SIGMA’s staggering f/1.8 aperture.
Because of 28 to 52mm (35mmm equivalent) zoom range, the lens is well suited for film makers, professional interior photography and landscape photography. Its large aperture would make it an interesting choice for reportage photography. However, due to its size and weight it is rather unwieldy for that purpose.
Conclusion
The SIGMA 18-35mm f/1.8 is superb, but this comes at the cost of size and weight.
On the other hand, the price for this premium lens is quite low. You also get a high quality lens hood and a nicely made lens keeper. It is probably one of the best value for money lenses you can get.
