Rediscovering the 28mm
It is the magic number. The definitive focal length for dynamic reportage.
Even when you are physically close to your subject, the 28mm refuses to ignore the world around them; it captures the environment, the context, and the story.
And if you do manage to get in tight, the perspective distortion lends the subject a layer of dynamic tension that makes the scene come alive.
For years, this focal length was my standard. However, as my work shifted towards nature photography—a genre defined by the isolation of telephoto lenses—I momentarily drifted from these roots.
I have returned to the streets to rediscover that wide perspective, facilitated by my in-depth test of the Brightin Star 28mm f/2.8. All frames were captured with the lens mounted on the Lumix S5D, using mostly zone focusing.
