The Monogram as Signifier
With nothing but pen, paper and my favorite camera sitting on my desk, I was in the process of crafting a new emblem for my photographic work. Each iteration of my sketches was a simplification of its predecessor.
While drawing inspiration from the abundant well of ideas is the initial impetus of creation, eliminating the superfluous and condensing a monolithic vision is the culmination of it.
The new monogram is said culmination; it is the signifier of my works and as such the ultimate punctum.
The Square Frame, comprised of four boundaries of equal dimensions in perpendicularity, forms the most solemn of all photographic samplers of reality. Devoid of vector and tension typical for other aspect ratios, the square requires the directeur artistique to create the dynamic.
The Subject for this specific photograph is my monogram in lowercase letters, a memento of the contrariety between the importance of the artist’s vision on the one hand and their obliqueness in the final work itself.
The Subversive element of my vision and style is communicated through the subtle, yet unmistakable unbalance introduced by the angled bar of the “e”.
Only the unconventional will endure.
