Neewer Lens Vice
Introduction
A lens vice is a tool that allows you to repair dented filter threads on camera lenses.
As my Canon 1014XL Super8 camera had quite a serious dent and I needed to attach filters to it, I decided to get a Neewer Lens Vice
Review
Specifications
According to the manufacturer, it is suitable for filter threads ranging from 27mm to 130mm in diameter. It has one thread on each side, one for larger and the other one for smaller diameters.
Build Quality
A lens vice has to be of very hard and durable material, otherwise it won’t be able to straighten the dent.
The Neewer Lens Vice is very well built. It is made out of steel and the tolerances seem to be very low.
Note: It seems that it is identical to many other lens vice tools from China that can purchased via various online retailers. All of these (including the Neewer) cost around 35 Euro.
In Use
It works. There is not much more to say. I used it to repair a very serious dent on the 58mm filter thread of the before mentioned Canon 1014XL and it worked flawlessly. The tool did not suffer any damage and it is still perfectly usable for other lenses.
However, it is really important to match your expectations. No tool on earth is capable of repairing a filter dent in a way that it completely vanishes. Significant force is required and this usually leads to a slight damage on the opposite side of the dent.
If you are careful enough you can restore functionality to the filter thread so that a lens filter can be mounted once more.
If the dent could not be repaired by the tool, it might help purchasing a step-up ring. They are usually made of thin metal and are therefore easier to attach to a (still) slightly bent filter thread.
Better not…
...damage your lens in the first place. But if you do, the Neewer Lens Vice is a great tool to fix your mistake.
