Zhiyun Cinepeer C100

Zhiyun Cinepeer C100.

1. Introduction

The Zhiyun Cinepeer C100 is a high-performance, professional-grade LED tube light, powerful enough to serve as a key-, fill- or effect light.

2. Basic Information

Type: Professional full-color LED tube light

Max. Power: 100 W

Operation temperature: -10°to 40°C (according to manufacturer)

Weight: 1400g (approximately)

3. Operating Modes

The C100 offers various operating modes for professional and creative uses:

CCT: Allows adjusting color temperature from 2700K to 6500K and brightness (0-100%) using the C100’s main array of LEDs. The mode also offers a Green/Magenta shift (-10 to +10) for precise color matching.

HSI: Hue, saturation, and intensity can be directly controlled, similar to image editing software.

RGB: Set individual values (0-100%) for red, green, and blue channels, along with a total brightness value. For two-channel use, only the center strip with tricolored LEDs operates. This grants precise color control for specific applications. All LEDs activate for three or more channels, similar to HSI mode.

FX Pixel: Each color effect (e.g., Color Fade, Color Chase, Rainbow) is fully configurable (brightness, effect speed, direction), making it a serious tool for creative filmmakers.

FX: Offers standard special effects (e.g., SOS, Paparazzi, Candle) with extensive configuration options (e.g. brightness, color, effect speed).

Music: The C100 detects music with its microphone and provides rhythmic lighting effects (up to 7 colors, adjustable brightness and hue). Results vary depending on music type and sound quality. Recommendation: Place the sound source near the microphone and set a high volume.

4. Flicker Frequency and Dimming

The Zhiyun C100 uses DC power (plugged in or on battery), but employs pulse-width modulation (PWM) for dimming, resulting in flickering. However, this is practically irrelevant for most filmmaking and photography applications. Cameras with readout times of 1/120s or shorter won’t show flickering, even in lab tests. Setting a fast shutter speed on a camera with a readout time of 1/60s revealed slight variations in some frames, but only under close scrutiny:

The C100 demonstrates a negligible deviation from a linear dimming response, even when varying the correlated color temperature.

5. Photometry and Spectrometry

All measurements were conducted at 1m under controlled lab conditions with ambient light below 1lx.

5.1. Bi-Color (CCT) Output

The Zhiyun C100 maintains a relatively high and consistent CRI (Ra) across all power outputs. Even the 1% setting exhibits only minimal performance difference compared to, for example, 50%. Generally, the CRI of the C100 is comparable to that of other high‑end LED fixtures in this price bracket.

Color Temperature Accuracy: With the standard diffuser, the deviation between set and measured CCT is minimal. Removing the diffuser might be appealing for improved Ra values across the range, but the measured CCT will deviate significantly from the set CCT, potentially causing white balance issues. Measurements on set would be necessary in this case.

Spectral Distribution w/Standard Diffuser:

Light Output: Removing the diffuser nearly doubles the light output, from a very bright 2180lx at 5526K to 4120lx at 5910K. This translates to one stop more light but with less diffusion.

Brightness in Context: A single C100 with the diffuser on at 4 meters still provides double the brightness of standard living room lights. This is impressive and currently class-leading for a tube light of this size and weight. Even a single C100 can function as a key light, especially when using bright lenses.

5.2. Color (RGB) Output

As expected, individual color outputs are not as strong as the bi-color output. Red delivers up to 579lx, green up to 987lx, and blue up to 359lx. The spectral characteristic of the tricolored LED chips is relatively narrow, which is desirable.

6. Power Supply

The Zhiyun C100 can be powered by either a plug-in power supply or the built in battery, offering full performance in both cases.

6.1 Battery

Six 4500mAh rechargeable lithium ion batteries provide stable power. Lab tests revealed a fully charged C100 set to 5500K delivers 100% output for 47min at room temperature (22°C). This runtime extends to 102min at 50% output.

6.2 Power Supply via Cable and Charging

The optional DC power adapter can charge the C100’s battery while in use, even at high brightness settings. With the light turned off, expect 3h 30min charge time from 0% to 100%.

Power can also be supplied via USB-C. If the USB adapter delivers sufficient wattage (at least 100W) and the light is set to a low output, it can charge while switched on.

7. Cooling

Outstanding heat dissipation is a key strength of the Zhiyun C100. The high-end (“DynaVort”) cooling system, consisting of metal heat sinks and an array of mini-fans, ensures the C100 remains operational at 100% at 40°C ambient temperature, even while charging.

The light's controls and metal hand grip maintain a low surface temperature, under all circumstances.

8. Connectivity and Software

The Cinepeer C100 can be remotely controlled and updated via the “ZY Vega” app. However, the app requires unnecessary permissions and data access. The firmware can also be updated via PC and USB-C cable using the “PTZ LED” software, which, despite its appearance, functions as intended.

Upgrades via the “ZY Vega” require sufficient charge.

9. Build Quality and Service Life

Overall, the Zhiyun C100 is built to a very high standard. Controls, chassis, and overall construction feel premium, with no noticeable play.

An accidental drop test confirmed the build quality. The C100 as well as its ¼” thread remained intact, while the full brass spigot of the light stand was bent out of shape.

Regarding service life, the excellent cooling system should ensure a long life cycle for the LED beads. On top of that, Zhiyun's repair facilities in Europe and the USA provide peace of mind for any potential repairs.
